Subject : 1/8" poplar over 7/8" MDF

our company has a project involving panels that are spec'ed at 1/8" poplar over 7/8" MDF. They will be edged with mitered wood for a raised panel profile so the 1/8"poplar will be over the MDF & edging with the poplar having 1/4" overlap over the edging which will be profiled.
The panels will be trapped by a frame but gospel seems to be equalizing veneer treatment, i.e. both faces should have 1/8" poplar.
Any thoughts?
